I am excited to write my first blog post! Where does one start? I live on a 1.2 acre plot in the suburbs of Seattle. After living in the UK for 10 years and moving to Seattle with my Liverpudlian husband I wanted to live the self-sufficient dream but the reality of having to work and earn money made buying a 5 - 10 acre plot, close enough to airports and the city, a bit of a dream. Additionally, a really big difference between the UK and US is that the countryside in the UK is full of lovely houses which the English call ‘posh’. In the US you might have a nice house in the countryside but the chances that your neighbors might have 20 rusting trucks in their yard is highly likely...not so posh.
This is my husband:
When we bought this house I had been saving my sales commission for many years and wanted to build a greenhouse and raised beds (we have rabbits a plenty). I set up drip irrigation on a timer for the raised beds and the greenhouse has a heater connected to a thermostat and a full ventilation system, also on a thermostat. I got myself set up with a really great system which meant aside from seed sowing and harvesting I did not have too much to do.
Fast forward about 5.5 years and we are now in present day! In that time I had a little boy who is now 19 months and got a new job in sales for a start up. I seem to now have even less time than ever and this has really made me evaluate what I want from life going forward.
What I want is to pack up, move somewhere nice (thinking of Italy), buy a 5+ acre property and start really living the self-sufficiency dream! Now I have managed to convince the husband (kinda) but we cannot pack up quite yet, we still have some money to save.
This blog will now continue with me sharing the fun I have as I get closer and closer to this new life. Thanks for joining me!
